swimming pool with 12' ceiling

i am building a new facility that will have 2 approximately 1800 sf warm water pools that will be approximately 90-92 degrees just for adults 18 y.o. and up - i hope they are quieter than kids. the ceilings will be low - 12' - due to the cost of heating and dehumidification. i could use either a hollow core concrete or a metal ceiling. the walls are all 12" block with 6" of sprayed closed cell insulation due to being a superinsulated LEED building. outside this is brick. interior finish is epoxy paint.

i am thinking of spraying an acoustic foam - maybe 1" or so - on the underside of the ceiling which will be on steel joists. i am thinking of using 2" waterproof sound panels on the walls below the windows which are no lower than 6' from the floor. the double pane windows will also have a separate layer of acrylic for energy efficiency but this will also lower sound levels.

i am also thinking of using waterproof banners on the ceiling hanging from the joists.

the building will take care of veterans with tbi and ptsd and other handicapped adults.

any advice gratefully accepted and am willing to talk to companies who can do this work in nashville tn. i am the future owner and will be the specifier for every aspect of the building.

Forum: How to Soundproof a Swimming Pool

Suggestions Appreciated

We have plastered walls, ceiling, and hardwood floors. The ceiling is decorative with a few small spaces (about 6' X 10') for about 4 panels. We have columns between Windows (approx. 31" X 80"H). The rest is all windows and hard floors. Can't put anything on the floors. Ceiling is about 16'H. Room is about 45'W X 120'L. We're using for weddings. Any suggestions for materials we can use or best way to handle?

Forum: How to Soundproof an Auditorium

My problem is with noise transfer from the first floor to the second floor at our shore house condo. The builder used minimum code construction...second floor down:

hardwood floors

5/8" sub flooring on 10" joist

3" of insulation

Resilient track

5/8" sheet rock

The noise transfer from the first floor (which has wood floors as well)to the second is high...voices (at a moderate level), moving chairs, foots steps, etc. We are unwilling to take down the existing ceiling, so we plan to apply a 5/8" or 1" sheet from manufactures of sound proof boards.... supress products or quiet solutions. We want to be cost prudent, however want the desire effects of not hearing noise from the first floor. How would your product help? Do you have advise?
Thanks

Forum: How to Soundproof a Ceiling

Soundproofing a fridge?

Just purchased a new GE Profile fridge. It's nice but is very loud when the compressor fans runs(which is almost all the time). Our kitchen opens to the living room and you can hear the fridge even while watching TV on the other side of the room.

It's in an alcove surrounded on all sides and there is room to put some sort of sound treatment around it.

What exactly do I need and how effective can I expect it to be? Ideally I'd like it to be almost silent but I'll be happy if the sound is reduced enough so I can't hear it from the living room.

Thanks for the help.

Joe

Forum: How to Soundproof a Floor

Power Outlets, etc.

1. I have kitchen cabinets on the far end of one of a common wall. From my understanding, I would have to bring down the cabinets, apply the db-block + drywall, and rehang them, since doing half of the common wall would defeat the purpose (I would imagine that kitchen cabinets / appliances transmit the sound just as much as anything else on the wall). If so, how would that affect the kitchen plumbing, etc? It doesn't sound like a do-it-yourself type of project. In the alternative, can I just apply the db-block and new dry wall only over the visible drywall in the kitchen area (i.e., above the kitchen cabinets only?) and save myself a lot of headache?

2. Same question as above re my master bathroom, where I don't want to remove the bath / sink. Also, my A/C closet is on a common wall and working in it would be very hard -- should I leave it as is?

3. how difficult is it to move the outlets to the new wall? Would cutting through the db-block and connecting the power outlets substantially defeat the sought dampening effect?

Thanks

Forum: How to Soundproof a Wall

For recording and rehearsal purposes

My name is Aaron, I live in the outskirts of new orleans, I recently purchased a home and I have this great space for rehearsal with my band and recording my own personal music as well as my bands. My room is half brick wall running at 18 ft and half plastic siding on the other and 4 windows, the width of the way is running at 12 ft and is plastic siding as well, the height of the room is 10 feet and it made up of wood, and the floor is all tile. I was wondering what options would be best suited for this time of room, and the size, I was checking out the 2ft by 4 ft wool cloth panels, would those suffice or what are yalls suggestions? I'm looking to reduce the sound in the room as well as the sound going out to make it efficient for practice and recording.

Forum: Sound Proofing for Home Musicians

PLEASE HELP!!!

I am a college student who has just moved into a new apartment. Everything is fantastic about it except around 8 each night the bar downstairs begins to play music far too loud. I have called to complain to the owner almost every night I have been here. I try to wait till I am ready to actually go to bed, and past ten because I believe that is when a stricter noise control law is in effect, and each time its the same. He first turns the music down and apologizes then twenty minutes later the volume is raised to its original levels. Recently if I call the bar itself and an employee picks up I am mocked as "their good buddy upstairs trying to ruin everyone's good time." Upon telling the manager this, he quickly apologized for their behavior and promises that he does not condone it; however I can't help but wonder. Also as I try to walk into my building and go past some of them sitting outside I have noticed that they stare at me and on at least two occasions have called out angrily towards me, I ignore it and walk into my building. This is stuff that I really don't think I should have to put up with.

On one night when 3 A.M. drunken karaoke had killed any remote possibility of sleep I decided to contact the police, and within minutes there were squad cars outside. A couple of days later I noticed that the bar had been closed for the day because of a suspended liquor license. Whether the two are related completely I do not know for sure. In any event it was the only night that I was able to get a full nights rest since moving in. The owner has since claimed to know nothing about how to better sound proof his establishment and asked me to come down and take a look at it for him and to help him in the process of quieting his place. However with the way I have been treated by his staff, I really do not want to have to go down there for a large amount of time. What I would like is to be able to find a professional who I can put them in contact with who can come in and help to sound proof the bar, and if necessary my apartment as well.

The bar is not very large, has a drop ceiling with no sound proofing material whatsoever, and a few of the speakers are placed directly on the walls. The bar also has an outside eating area, a place where they can get away with smoking and drinking still, after a Pennsylvania law was released to prevent such actions. The owner wishes that the music could be heard outside in that area, however as far as I can tell to do this he simply turns the music up inside. Obviously these are all major issues that would attribute to my sleepless nights, but I was hoping that you would be able to help me find someone in my area of Bethlehem PA, who would be able to do such a job. Also I worry about if this job is done for them, and done poorly resulting in only a minor reduction then the owner will not want to go any further in helping this situation after already putting money into fixing it.

I believe that according to Bethlehem's sound ordinances that I have been reading online, they are in violation, but I of course cannot fully prove this. Although I feel like what is worse at times then hearing the noise is feeling the sound vibrations in my bed as I try and sleep, so for me earplugs have worked very little to help me get to bed as I can still feel the music. After a week of living with very little to no REM sleep I have found myself increasingly more irritable, and I find it very difficult to distract myself from thinking of anything else when the music begins to play. I am struggling to deal with this now, but once I return to classes in August, I simply cannot have this kind of thing distracting me from my work, I am already far in debt to pay for my education, and I cannot have it ruined by a bar. Please help me in any way that you can!

Tom Connors

(570)-691-6550

tc3612@desales.edu

6 West 4th Street APT 2

Bethlehem PA 18015

Hi,

I'm a trombonist living in an apartment in LA and would really like to practice more, but am trying to avoid aggravating my neighbors. I don't have anyone living above or below me, but do have people on either side of the apartment. I've been reviewing several products and, although I realize it is for industrial purposes, am curious if something like the dB-drapes would apply.

I'm obviously unable to alter the building structure or walls of the apartment too much, but really need something to lower the overall sound from my horn.

Thanks!

Forum: Sound Proofing for Home Musicians

Low frequencies , and Canadian customers

Hello- looks like I'll be the first to dip my toe in at the new forums!

I'm still doing my research and am interested in the DB-Bloc approach. But I have a couple of questions. It's heavy- as it must be - so I figure shipping it to Canada would cost a small fortune. Perhaps a large one. Is there a Canadian (preferably in Ontario) company that stocks DB-Bloc?

Secondly, a competing company, selling an acoustic sealant advises that using the STC system may lead to weighted results since low frequencies aren't as effectively measured as (presumably) mid-frequencies.Comments?

If DB-bloc either isn't available to me or is to expensive to procure, how well would concrete wallboard do the job, though it's obviously much harder to work with and thicker?
---
Thanks for your quick and thorough reply! You've given me a lot to chew on. (I wasn't able to "reply" to your response as it was for Moderators only.)

Forum: How to Soundproof a Wall
